Testi: Bkool smart trainer & simulator

Please scroll down for the English version.

Trainerin mukana tuli kolme kuukautta ilmaista premium jäsenyyttä Bkool simulaattoriin. No sehän piti tietenkin ottaa heti käyttöön.

Flag_of_United_KingdomThis coming winter, I thought to keep in a good cycling shape a little differently than in previous winters. I purchased a Bkool Smart Pro trainer, so I can cycle all winter conveniently indoors. Outdoor cycling is indeed pretty nice, but riding in the snow is so very different approach in training. I might even improve my cycling shape.

I purchased the Bkool trainer because it can take 20″ or bigger wheels. So it is suitable for use with my Challenge Hurricane recumbent bike. Direct drive Trainer might also been a good option. With this Bkool trainer you need to have a slick high pressure tire on your driving wheel, but with a direct-drive trainer the trainer itself is replacing the driving wheel. This causes little problem now that if I want to go out cycling in the winter with Hurricane, first I need to change winter tires, then I have to change the slick tire back, if I want to use the trainer again. But the direct-drive trainers are more expensive, so I ended up with this Bkool.

Trainer

Bkool Smart Pro package includes, in addition to the the trainer itself, a quick-release, the power supply, a small ANT + receiver to the USB port and support for the front wheel. Trainer itself comes in two parts, the resistance unit and the frame individually. They are connected with a quick locking mechanism. It’s pretty easy to assemble when you first notice the right position where it locks into place most easily.

Attaching the bike on the trainer is also relatively straightforward. The bikes own quick release must be first changed with the Bkool quick release. After that attaching the bike is pretty easy.

In order to be able to communicate with a computer, the small ANT + receiver must be connected to the computer’s USB port. I noticed that in some situations, this wireless connection is a little bad. When I first launched the simulator, it announced immediately that there is a firmware update for the trainer. I could not get it to succeed before I moved the computer about one centimeter away from the trainer. Apparently during the firmware update the connection must be as good as possible.

Also a couple of times during a training, I noticed that the connection was somehow bad. I noticed that the resistance did not change even if the hill climbing angle changes in the simulator. Also, the speed information was lagging. I moved the computer a little bit closer to the trainer, and it seemed to solve this problem. Now the distance is just over one meter. USB extension cable might also solve this problem.

The only clear disadvantage of this trainer is that this does not have adjustable feet. If the floor is crooked, you have to put some things under the other leg. I used plywood. Interesting here is that my garage floor is just twisted in the same direction. So actually I tilted the trainer even more. But sitting on the bike it felt right. Maybe this is because of that I’m accustomed to ride a tricycle, which is of course always tilted toward the ditch, so as the road.

Simulator

A Smart turbo trainer is intended to use with a simulator. Yes it works fine without it, but riding is not as interesting. The trainer came with three months of free premium membership for Bkool simulator. Well, of course I had to use it immediately. The simulator operates together with bkool.com site. All training sessions are saved to the site and from there you can search for and schedule your next sessions. Bkool can be connected with Strava, then all Bkool sessions will also update to Strava, and all your real world routes stored in the Strava can also be found from Bkool. So therefore I can ride my commuting route with the simulator.

Reittien valitseminen. / Selecting a route.

From the Bkool.com site you can search for routes around the world, and then schedule them for your self. Scheduled routes and training sessions will then appear to the Bkool simulator homepage. If you are too lazy to look for the website of a particular route or sessions, you can just open the simulator and select any of the ongoing live sessions of the front page. There is also some search functions, which help you to limit the amount of live sessions under certain conditions.

Riding

At first, it felt awfully heavy and stupid to pedal in the garage. No matter how much I pedal, the bike did not move. I thought already that maybe this was a bad idea, will I ever ride with this again when this is so painful. But in the next time I noticed that my bike does not have to move, as long as the bike is moving in the simulator.

img_0061

Well, the Virtual Cycling is actually very fun when you can compete against other cyclists who are pedaling on the other side of the world in their own garages. I can also see how I improve my cycling shape. Because when I’m improving in the game it means that I’m also improving in real life.

The simulator simulates the terrain, the road surface, riding in the slipstream of others, and probably also wind. All this affects the amount of resistance. Uphills are heavy and downhills are light. However, the effect of the wind is a little tricky to verify.

I cannot compare the power meter readings of Bkool. But I have heard, that it is a bit overestimating the power. But I can not be sure. The simulator is somehow guessing the cadence reading, but it does not always go quite right. On a flat road when pedaling fast the reading shows quite right, but when riding uphill and pedaling hard I feel that it is only about half of the true value.

img_0038

When riding hard the wheel is bouncing pretty much on the trainer. I did not notice it when riding myself, but when I was shooting the attached video, I noticed that it bounces sometimes a lot. It’s probably causing tire slip on the resistance. Hurricane rear suspension may also play a role here.

Here is a short video about the trainer and the simulator:

  1. Moi. Ostin juuri saman trainerin, nyt vaan odotellaan saapuvaksi ?Tiedätkö voiko bkoolin liittää iPad tablettiin?

  2. Mites bkoolin softa, saako synkronoitua garminiin?
