Noniin, kisat on taas ajettu.

Last weekend was the Finnish Recumbent Championships. Weather forecast promised heavy rain and thunderstorms for the weekend, but fortunately forecasts were not quite correct. On Saturday the weather was mainly sunny with short showers. In the morning before the start of 200 meters race the track was quite dry and the sun was shining, but it started to rain shortly after the race started. Not many had time to try their speed on dry track. I had to push myself in the rain, but despite that I improved my last year’s result. This time my speed was 68.89 km/h. I was aiming to 70 km/h, but the rain ruined my speed. I’m still happy with my performance, because i was on third place.

In the afternoon, the weather varied between sunshine and rain showers. In the pit area we chatted and looked at each other bikes. There was many interesting DIY bikes. See the best parts in the video. Later in the afternoon was the one hour race. First started the slow group. They started their race in rain shower. But fortunately the rain lasted no more than ten minutes. After they had finished, it was the fast group’s turn. The weather remained clear for whole hour with the fast group, but the track did not had the time to dry completely. I am very happy with my performance. I rode 50.8 km during the hour. More than last year. I was again on third place.

1 tunnin ajon lähtö / 1 hour race start

On Sunday were the long distance races. In the morning when we got to the track, was the 12-hour race already in progress. We checked carefully the weather forecast for the day. It seemed that it would rain for the last two hours of the 6 hours race. We started with the 6-hour race during a rain shower. Thankfully the shower did’nt last very long and the weather was nice for many hours. The track even had time to dry up almost completely.

This time, I did not had any strategy for the race. I decided go for as long as I can and then stop to take a break. I had enough water with me so I did not have to stop to refill from time to time. I rode first a little over two hours, and then I went on a break and ate a little.  Then I rode about one and a half hours, after which I was forced to keep the short break to strech my legs because I was starting to get numb. Just after four hours started to rain, so the forecast was right. The last two hours was run in the rain. I took one more break about an hour before the end of the race. The Garmin displayed  247 km, which is exactly the same distance as last year. But official results showed that it was actually two rounds less than last year. But it still was enough for me to be the fastest in my category.

This year on the track there was three other velomobiles going roughly as fast as I was. And because drafting was allowed during the 6 and 12 hour races, yes, I used it recklessly. Drafting is pretty fun and it also helps a little. However, behind aerodynamic velomobile there is not quite as good draft as eg. behind a road cyclist.

Here is a little ten minute video summary of the race weekend. See you again next year!
