Testissä: Parrot Bebop 2 drone

Please scroll down for the English version.

Ostin edullisen Bluetooth peliohjaimen puhelimelle. Free Flight Pro:ssa voi määritellä kyseisen ohjaimen dronen kauko-ohjaimeksi. Fyysisillä ohjaussauvoilla on paljon miellyttävämpi ohjata.

Ominaisuudet

Tärkeimpiä älyominaisuuksia Parrot Bebop 2:ssa ovat lentosuunnitelma (Flight Plan) ja seuranta toiminto (Follow Me). Lentosuunnitelmalla voi piirtää kartalle reitin, jonka drone lentää. Reitillä voi määritellä mihin suuntaan kamera osoittaa. Kartalta voi esimerkiksi valita jonkun kohteen, johon kamera osoittaa dronen lentäessä ohi (Point of Interest).

Follow Me toiminto taas osaa seurata minua sekä visuaalisesti, että GPS:n avulla. Drone siis seuraa sijaintiani puhelimen (eli siis ohjaimen) GPS:n perusteella samalla käyttäen visuaalista konenäköä apuna. Se toimii muuten yllättävän hyvin. Katso testitulokset tämän artikkelin ohessa olevalta videolta.

Sitten kopterissa on myös kotiinpaluutoiminto (Return to Home).

Kuvanlaatu

Bebop 2:ssa on kiinteä kamera kalansilmälinssillä, toisin, kuin monissa muissa koptereissa, joissa on gimbal. Bebopissa kuvan vakautus toimii elektronisesti. SIlloin videokuvassa näkyy mustia palkkeja kuvan reunoilla.

Bebop 2:n kamerassa on kiinteä tarkennus.

Hämärässä Bebopin kamera on ihan toivoton.

I have been thinking about buying my own camera drone for a while now. But the good drones have been quite expensive. I would like to have a drone, which can fit into a small space, which have some sort of automatic tracking feature, and with a good and stable image. A year ago DJI released Mavic Pro, which meets all of my requirements. But the price is just too high. I’ve been trying to find a alternative device, which would be more affordable. Then I found the Parrot Bebop 2 with the price of only half of the Mavic. It doesn’t go quite as small space as Mavic, and the picture quality isn’t quite as good, but otherwise it would be suitable for my intended use. Then by chance I found really good offer of Bebop 2 and I think I got it in very cheap price. So here it is.

Controlling

I got my Bebop drone for less than four hundred euros. If I had bought a separate remote controller (Parrot Sky Controller 2), I would had to pay three hundred more. But fortunately Bebop can be controlled with a smartphone. The drone creates a WiFi network that the smartphone is connected to, and controlling is done using the Parrot Free Flight Pro app.

Controlling by touch screen is by no means pleasant, and the range with mobile phone alone is not very long, so I decided to build my own cheapo Sky Controller. I bought a low-cost Bluetooth game controller for my phone. The controller can be determined to be the drone remote controller in Free Flight Pro. Physical control sticks are much more pleasant to use.

I also bought a low-priced WiFi repeater. When I connect the repeater to drone’s Wifi and then the phone to the extended network I get considerably more range. I did tests and found that with smartphone only the range is about 250 meters and with the WiFi repeater the range is about 1 kilometer.

Features

The main smart features the Parrot Bebop 2 has are the Flight Plan and Follow Me function. The flight plan can be drawn on the map with the route, which the drone will fly. You can determine in which direction the camera is pointing when flying the route. For example, you can select a Point of Interest on the map and the camera keeps pointing towards it when flying by.

Follow Me function allows the drone to follow me both visually and using the GPS. The drone tracks the GPS location of the phone and it also tracks a visual object (me) with the camera. It works surprisingly well by the way. See test results from the attached video.

Then the drone also has Return to Home function. When taking-off, the drone saves the GPS coordinates of the place of take-off in the memory. If the drone lose the signal to controller (phone), for example if it fly out of range, it waits for the signal for a moment. If no signal is found, the drone returns back to the take-off position. For this reason, it is very important to check the drone has found a strong GPS signal before takeoff.

Image quality

Bebop 2 has fixed camera with a fisheye lense, unlike many other drones with a gimbal. The Bebop’s image stabilization works electronically. The software crops the image area size to 1080p. Stabilization works surprisingly well. But this kind of stabilization will also cause some problems. When the drone flies sideways, annoying interference will appear in the picture. In some situations, the drone is moving to a position that the camera’s image area runs out. Then black bars are displayed at the edges of the image.

The camera of Bebop 2 has a fixed focus. This causes a very interesting problem at least with my unit. The image is not sharp in the cold air. I tried this during spring frosts, and indeed the picture is out of focus. Right after exiting the warm house while the camera and the drone is still warm – the picture is sharp. But already after a few minutes of flying in the cold winter air (tested approx. -6 ° C), the image becomes out of focus and soft. See the enclosed video for more.

In low-light the Bebop camera is pretty hopeless. The picture is grainy and soft. But with proper lighting the Bebop’s camera does pretty reasonable job. It’s obviously not anywhere near DJI’s quality, but perhaps in this price range it is quite ok.

Or would have been, before DJI released a new drone – DJI Spark. It is priced around five hundred euros. It’s really small drone with a 1080p camera and two axis gimbal. So now I’m a little annoyed that I bought the Parrot Bebop 2, when I could have use about same amount of money to DJI’s small drone that goes into a smaller space and has better image quality. But for now we go with this.

Here is the test video.
