Testi: Sony AS200V action cam

Scroll down for English version.

Contents of the retail package.
Myyntipakkauksen sisältö. / Contents of the retail package.

Vesitiiviissä kotelossa on tavallinen jalustakierre.

Sonyn oma USB laturi antaa 1,5A virtaa, joten oman 1A laturini latausaika asettunee johonkin edellisten väliin.

Akku ja muistikortti. / Battery and memory card.
Akku ja muistikortti. / Battery and memory card.

Muistikortti asetetaan akun viereen takakannen taakse.

Display in movie mode.
Näyttö videokuvaus tilassa. / Display in movie mode.

Valikkojen selaaminen pieneltä näytöltä on hieman vaivalloista.

Sony AS200V tallentaa parhaimmillaan 1080/60p videota.

  • 1080 / 60p
  • 1080 / 30p
  • 720 / 30p
  • 720 / 120p
  • 480 / 240p

Kuvaaminen

Sony uudella paikallaan. / Sony on it's new place.
Sony uudella paikallaan. / Sony on it’s new place.

Flag_of_United_KingdomFor some time now I have been thinking about that if I buy new camera or not. SJ4000 is been working reasonably well and it has a pretty decent image quality. However, the battery does not last long enough in my opinion (just about 90 min). And it records .mov files, which are not directly compatible with Garmin Virb Edit program that I use to add GPS data to video. So I have every now and then looked at other options.

Maybe I have mentioned here before that I began to follow Finnish Velogi  videoblog in YouTube. I noticed that the quality of Velogi videos is very good. In his riding videos the image is steady and pleasing to look at. Of course, the editing is very well done, but let’s not talk about that. Velogi had also made a video about his camera equipment. He uses Sony’s action camera, because they have image stabilization. That’s how I got the idea to explore Sony’s range of action cams, and so I decided to purchase AS200V action camera for myself.

Sony HDR-AS200V

In addition to the image stabilization the camera has WiFi and GPS, as well as high speed features. The camera body is splash proof, but it also comes with a waterproof case wich is water tight to five meters. The camera records .mp4 files, which should go directly to the Virb Edit program. I could not find any accurate information about battery life, but it should be a few hours when you switch Wifi and GPS off.

Myyntipakkaus / Retail package.

The package did not have a lot of extra stuff included. In addition to the camera, battery, and a water proof case it comes with a USB-cable, and two adhesive mounts and a mounting bracket.

Myyntipakkauksen sisältö. / Contents of the retail package.
Myyntipakkauksen sisältö. / Contents of the retail package.

The bracket has a standard tripod mount so basically it can be used with other cameras as well. These mounts are not compatible with GoPro even though they are remotely similar. There’s also a tripod mount adapter for the camera becouse the thread in bottom of the camera is not a standard tripod thread. The additional adapter is attached to the camera when you want to use it with a tripod. The water proof case has a standard tripod thread.

Somewhat surprisingly the package does not contain any other charger than just a USB cable. The camera should always be charged from your computer’s USB port. Well, that is not always possible, so I tried to charge the camera with a charger of another device with USB port. Charger specifications said that it gives 5V and 1A current. That did charge the battery rather quickly. From the camera manual ( .pdf file in Sony’s website ) I found the charging times for different charging methods. Charging with computer’s USB port would take 245 minutes and a separately sold Sony USB charger 175 minutes. Sony’s own USB charger provides 1.5A current, so my 1A charger’s charging time will probably settle somewhere in between.

The memory card is placed next to the battery behind the back cover. The camera accepts both micro SD card and the Memory Stick Micro (M2) cards. Both card types goes in to the same slot but in different way than the other. That’s why you can accidentally put the card in upside down. If you put the card in upside down, the camera screen announces that it can not find the card at all.

Kolme painiketta ja näyttö. /Three buttons and display.
Kolme painiketta ja näyttö. /Three buttons and display.

The camera does not have a viewfinder at all. The display on the side is just a small setting screen that allows you to adjust the camera settings. It also tells you how much is battery power left, how much storage space is remaining and the type of video recorded.

Näyttö videokuvaus tilassa. / Display in movie mode.
Näyttö videokuvaus tilassa. / Display in movie mode.

The menu is scrolled with two buttons located next to the display. Options are saved with the rec button. If both navigation buttons are pressed at the same time the camera goes directly to the Wi-Fi menu. It is very convenient because you can easily and quickly switch the Wi-Fi on and off. You may need Wi-Fi every now and then if you want to use your smartphone or separate Sony’s Live View Remote Control as a viewfinder. Navigating in the menus through the small screen is a little bit tricky. If you don’t remember the menu structure, finding a particular menu item may be difficult.

The camera also has a GPS receiver. It can record GPS data when shooting. This data could then be overlayed on top of the video using Sony’s own software. I think that I’ll never use this feature because I can get the GPS data from the Garmin cycling computer and overlay it in the video using a Garmin Virb Edit software. Keeping the camera’s GPS on drains the battery faster.

There are two doors at the bottom of the camera. Behind the smaller door there is the USB port and behind the other larger door is the microphone and HDMI connectors. There is also a Sony’s accessory connector. And, as already mentioned above,  the thread at the bottom is not a standard tripod thread. The Sony’s own tripod adapter which came with the package can be attached here. It is not necessary when used with the water proof case.

Sony AS200V can record 1080 / 60p video. It can save .mp4 format, but also XAVC S format video. XAVC S format video can be recorded only to fast SDXC card. Other video formats are

  • 1080 / 60p
  • 1080 / 30p
  • 720 / 30p
  • 720 / 120p
  • 480 / 240p

Recording

When you first get the settings ready the recording is really easy. Just press the rec button and the camera wakes up and begins to record immediately.

PlayMemories ohjelman live näkymä. / PlayMemories app live view

But if you want to crop the picture in more detail you have to use Sony’s own Live View remote control or a smartphone. I did’t purchase  Sony’s remote control. I will simply use the iPhone with Sony’s PlayMemories app. The app shows a live image from the camera, it can also start and stop recording, and adjust some basic settings. Adjusting the settings with bigger display is much easier than to scroll through complex menu of the camera.

PlayMemories ohjelman asetus valikko. / PlayMemories app setup view.

I’ll be using this camera mainly for shooting my own cycling. Now that this battery will last longer than SJ4000, perhaps I use this more like a dash cam so maybe I can record other people doing stupid things in traffic. (I myself never do stupid things ?) So to test the features of the camera I went to cycling. I decided not to use the Sony camera mounts but to use the mounts of SJ4000, because they are compatible with GoPro and they are pretty cheap and easy to get from Ebay. GoPro mounts are also much more versatile.

Sony uudella paikallaan. / Sony on it's new place.
Sony uudella paikallaan. / Sony on it’s new place.

Sony’s image quality is good and the colors are bright. Electronic image stabilization (Steady Shot) works well. With Steady Shot off the angle of view is 170 °, with the Steady Shot on it is about 120 °. The Steady Shot may cause funny distortion to the edge of image. When hand helding the camera the Steady Shot is performing well. But when the camera is attached to the side of the velomobile, it does not quite manage to stabilize all fast shocks. You can see in the video, how the image stabilizer performs in practice

The camera also records sound quite well through the waterproof case. Much better than SJ4000. The sound quality would of course be better without the case, but in my videos the sound is not very important. The splash proof camera could quite well be used without a water proof case, but then I would recommend to use additional lens protector.

In this test video I tried to find a suitable place for the camera on the side of the velomobile. At the same time I tested the different features. I didn’t want to glue the adhesive GoPro mount to the side of the velomobile because it is ugly and affect the aerodynamic properties. But unfortunately it was the only way to get more stable image. I may need to add a second mount to the other side, so it would be symmetrically equally ugly and to get more camera angles.

This was my quick test of Sony AS200V. I have now quite a bit of camera gear scraped together and a few ideas for my next video. More about that later…

Edit 2.6.2016

When recording video, the battery lasts about 2 h 18 min, if GPS and WiFi are off. (1080 / 30p)

  1. Hello
Nice review. It seems that it is a good camera. A fine test you have made, especially how it work with velomobile
Since many mounts are made for GoPro, it is nice that it is compatibel with them.

Have some fun (fixed) and safe rides, let the camera ”roll” 🙂
